BMW has unveiled pictures and specifications of the 5-Series ActiveHybrid, the hybrid sedan developed on the basis of the 535 version. The German firm is probably close to decided on killing the hybrid version of the X6 – due to absence of demand for the 480 horsepower V8 hybrid – and has a difficult time dealing with its icon as being a sporty carmaker with the fact that they need to get on the “Eco” to stay highly competitive.
The 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 features the TwinPower turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with an electric drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor can also perform as a generator to recharge batteries in the release phase of throttle and during braking, while returns this power to the electric unit when needed. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 offers also Start & Stop system that shuts off the engine while waiting at traffic lights leaving the air conditioner switched on thanks to the lithium-ion battery. The ActiveHybrid 5 Eco Pro system, helps to make most of the eco-functionality of the car by minimizing the use of the six-cylinder up to 160 km/h.
BMW states that Hybrid sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds with an average fuel consumption based on the European Test Cycle between 6.4 and 7 l/100 km, relying on the type of tire used, and CO2 emissions of 149-163 g/km.
On the external, the bavarian’s car changes from the standard version for the logo on the rear and the dual exhaust with chrome finish. The cockpit also receive some customization like plates to the sill door and to the center console. The load capacity of this conversion has reduced to 375 liters, 145 less than in standard car.
The 2012 ActiveHybrid 5 will probably come to show room in the first months of next year.
