Audi A5 e-tron quattro plug-in hybrid: the future 4wd

The folks of the Audi ePerfomance project house have developed an interesting and advanced prototype with plug-in hybrid technology known as Audi e-tron Quattro. This concept developments shows the high potential of an innovative four-wheel drive system with an electric motor which acts on the rear axle by dividing the power to both wheels.

THE AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO DRIVE: this technology has involved a A5 coupe which has been modified and lighter, weighing less than 1,600 kg thanks to the boy made of aluminum and reinforced carbon fiber. Audi A5 e-tron Quattro features a petrol engine 2.0 TFSI with 211 hp and 350 Nm of torque and is combined, through a dry electronic clutch, to an electric motor (synchronous with permanent magnet) by 45 hp and 211 Nm of torque, again paired to the four-speed automatic transmission. While this block is responsible to transfer torque to the front wheels, a second electric motor by 81 HP and 300 Nm of torque  drives the rear wheels from the rear differential box.

ALSO FULL GREEN: the german hybrid 4wd can get 100 km/h  in speed even with the only electric motors, with a range of 40 km. In everyday driving, the e-tron Quattro uses the front-wheel drive hybrid system, but when is necessary more power, as in fast acceleration, the engine positioned on the rear axle comes into operation, ensuring maximum efficiency and safetys,  providing a total of 110 hp (only for short time) which if added to those of the 2.0-liter TFSI engine gets a total of 314 hp.
