Last month, Joop Donkervoort released some pictures and information about his car company’s newest project, the Donkervoort D8 GTO. The Donkervoort team of developers in the Netherlands has been working on the D8 GTO for the previous 30 months. 25 models of the car will become available to the public in the summer of 2012. Half of those 25 models have already been sold, according to Joop Donkervoort. Standard issue models of the D8 GTO will be available at some point in 2013, according to some sources.
The D8 GTO’s design is based on the racecars Joop Donkervoort remembers his grandfather driving. The car has a sleek appearance that combines vintage and contemporary design elements. The car’s base frame is made of tubular steel, and its body panels are made from carbon-composite. The D8 GTO is open-topped with large tires that propel the car forward efficiently at high speeds. The D8 GTO seems to be an ideal vehicle for a high-speed drive down the highway on a sunny, balmy day.
The D8 GTO is larger and faster than Donkervoort’s current top car, the D8 GT. It is around 35 centimeters longer and 15 centimeters wider. Despite its relatively large size, the car only weighs around 700 kg. In terms of power, the D8 GTO boasts a 2.5-liter TFSI engine that is five-cylinder. This engine was made with Audi’s Quattro GmbH, which allows drivers of the car to press a button on the dashboard and go from 340 to 400 horsepower in a split second.
The differences between the D8 GTO and the D8 GT are not limited to size and speed. The bodies and bases of the cars are made of completely different materials. The Donkervoort D8 GTO comes with an entirely redesigned rear axle and stabilizer bar. Plus, the GTO has traction control, which the GT lacks. Donkervoort enthusiasts will certainly be pleased by the innovative additions to the D8 GTO.
