The new Toyota FT-86 II proposes the idea of a car with two doors, front engine and aggressive design. Differences between the Toyota FT-86 presented at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show and the current prototype – just presented at the recent Geneva Motor Show – are obviously many and have been dictated by feedback from whom have driven the Toyota FT-86 II in last two years.
TECHNICAL DETAILS: The FT-86 prototype II, whose production expected in 2012, is designed to provide the best driving experience, including fast trottle and steering response. The car is 4235 mm long, 1795 mm wide and is only 1270 mm high, while the weelbase is 2570 mm, highlighted by a long and low hood, one of many elements that, in addition to conferring a masculine appearance, are developed as a aerodynamic function. The windshield is much less inclined, along with other changes that have affected the rear and front bumper, renovated with LED lights resembling those of the FT-HS Concept 2007. The rear-wheel drive is assigned to a boxer engine (originally Subaru), connected to the 6-speed manual transmission. Particularly important is the COG (centre of gravity), kept low to optimize grip, agility and balance at high speeds. From this concept will be born in 2012 a sporty compact rear-wheel drive, developed together with Fuji Heavy Industries. .
Akihiro Nagaya, Toyota design manager, has revealed to Autocar that the concept of Geneva provides a good idea in terms of appearance of the production model.
